Reasons To Test For Legionella
Legionella bacteria can be a serious health risk. This is especially true in places where the bacteria can grow and spread. Large plumbing systems and cooling towers are common examples.
Legionella bacteria can cause Legionnaires’ disease, which is a serious type of pneumonia. It can also lead to Pontiac fever, which feels like the flu but is less severe. These illnesses can be fatal, particularly in people with compromised immune systems. Legionella testing can help organizations achieve several important goals.

Many organizations, like those in healthcare, must have water management policies. These help reduce the risk of Legionella and other harmful germs. Testing is not always required but can play an important role in validating compliance.
Even if the law does not require testing for Legionella, baseline testing can help ensure water safety. Water sample collecting is important for places like hotels and recreational facilities.
An outbreak of Legionnaires' disease linked to a company's facilities can harm its reputation. This could lead to lost business and other problems. Routine testing can help limit the risk of an outbreak. If an outbreak does occur, testing can help identify the source.
Pace® Legionella Water Testing Methods
Pace® offers a variety of test methods for detecting Legionella in water. Our team of experts can help you determine which test is right for your needs with quick turnaround time.
The ISO 11731 culture method is the gold standard for testing Legionella. It follows the International Organization for Standardization's rules for finding and counting Legionella. This method also allows for detection and enumeration of both Legionella pneumophila and non-pneumophila Legionella species.
Legionella CDC culture can identify all Legionella species and serogroups. This also provides the isolates for analyses like source tracking. The method required for compliance in some jurisdictions.
Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) is a fast method. It can detect Legionella species in water samples, including Legionella pneumophila. This works for both drinking and non-drinking water.
An easy to use culture test for Legionella pneumophila. This is the species responsible for the majority of Legionnaires' disease incidents. However, this test method has certain limitations that may make it unsuitable for certain testing scenarios.

WHICH LEGIONELLA TEST SHOULD I USE?
Suitable for | TAT* | Advantages | Disadvantages | |
---|---|---|---|---|
Legionella ISO Culture | 7 days** |
Longer TAT required than all other methods. (Can be paired with qPCR to begin initial outbreak forensics.) | ||
Legionella CDC Culture | 7 days** | Longer TAT required than Legionella qPCR. (Can be paired with qPCR to begin initial outbreak forensics.) | ||
Legionella qPCR | 1-2 days | |||
Legiolert | Baseline testing and water management validation | 7 days |
* Turnaround time. All TATs quoted are industry standard. Some scenarios may allow for faster turnaround. Talk with your Pace® representative if faster results are needed.
